Dental disease is preventable. You may simply require a small adjustment to your routine to ensure that your teeth remain free of disease and not requiring expensive dental treatments. While brushing your teeth at home twice a day is recommended, to remove debris built up over time requires specialised cleaning. Professional teeth cleaning by a dental hygienist or a dentist should be done every 6 months.
Teeth accumulate plaque and debris around and under the gums from continual accumulation of minerals from saliva. The degree of this accumulation varies according to an individual’s diet. Plaque that is less than a day old does not harm the gums and teeth, but as the plaque accumulates, it hardens. This makes it difficult to remove with a normal tooth brush or dental floss. When plaque hardens, it starts to get toxic to the surrounding gums. The toxins from the plaque inflame the surrounding gum and in turn the bone that houses teeth.
The majority of tooth loss is due to gum disease which is a direct consequence of not having regular professional scraping and cleaning done. Dentists have specialised tools to remove this thick build up.
When you come to our dental practice, we will examine your teeth, gums and state of your surrounding bone. After the teeth cleaning treatment, we would advise a plan of action to protect your teeth with the aim of retaining them for life.
If you would like to book a professional teeth clean, or have any questions, please call our practice and one of our friendly staff will be happy to assist.
